General Networking Notes and Warnings

These instructions encompass Windows XP, Windows Vista, 7, 8 & 10 environments.  If you are uncertain as to your operating system, please consult with your local computer professional.

IMPORTANT!!!! This document assumes that you network is complete, and all computers are communicating. Your network MUST be up and running, and all computers communicating, prior to following these instructions. If your network is incomplete, these instructions will not work, and our product support team will be unable to assist you with these instructions.

Please note: Our support team cannot assist you with configuring your network itself. It must be complete prior to them assisting you. If your network is incomplete, please contact your local computer rep to assist you.

WARNING! It is not recommended that you use wireless networking with your product. If the wireless signal is broken during a write operation, your database could become corrupt beyond repair. A regular wired network is strongly recommended. Before continuing, please be sure that you have downloaded and installed the latest version of Kennel Connection 6.0, as well as all Windows Updates. Your network MUST be in place and configured and all computers communicating prior to using these instructions.

If you have not already, select a computer to be the main computer, or server. This machine will house the database and should be capable of backing up the database.  The Kennel Connection software product must be installed on ALL computers that will operate on the network and the database file (wkennel.mdb) must reside with its supporting files in the KC6 folder of the main computer.

Windows Vista/Windows 7

WARNING! Your software product MUST be installed per the Windows Vista/Windows 7 Guidelines on ALL computers on the network as posted on the Home Page of the Blue Crystal Software Corporation Online Product Support Center. Please verify that you have installed your software properly before continuing.

Windows XP Peer-to-Peer Networking Environment

WARNING! Windows XP WILL NOT allow sharing of the product folder if it is within the 'Program Files' folder. Please install Kennel Connection to the C:\KC6 directory. Please consult your local computer technician about sharing this folder.

1.  Share the KC6 folder on the main computer.  NOTE: This is the KC6 folder that was created during the install of the program. The report files (*.RPT) MUST be in the same folder as the database. Do not separate them. Do this by choosing My Computer in XP or Computer, in Vista & 7) from the Start menu. For windows 8, click the “file explorer” icon on the bottom task bar and then click on “computer” on the left hand side. Then double click on your C: drive. Look for the KC6 folder. Click on the KC6 folder ONCE so it’s highlighted, then right click on the KC6 folder and choose “Properties”. In the properties window, click the “sharing” tab. Then click Share.

Pointing The Workstations to the main KC6 folder

  1. From each workstation, assuming your KC software has already been installed, you’ll need to map a network drive to the KC6 folder on the main computer. Please see the “KC 6 drive mapping” instructions here:

Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10:
Mapping a network drive for Kennel Connection 6 on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10

2.  Once you have the mapped drives properly setup you’ll then need to tell KC 6 where to find the database. At each individual workstation open Computer > open your LOCAL C: drive and locate and open the KC6 folder. Inside the KC6 folder you will find the wkennel.ini file. This is your configuration settings for KC6. Double Click it or choose open with notepad.

3.  In the top section, next to DataDrive= change the letter C to a K (or whichever letter you chose when you mapped the network drive). Then clear out the directory name on the DataDir=line. When completed, it should look like this:

4. Click File > save and exit the wkennel.ini file. The steps above MUST be repeated on EACH of your workstations.

5.  Now you must disable the power saving features of both the computer itself and its associated network card for each computer on the network including the main computer where the database is housed. Not doing so could cause the main computer or any workstation to go to sleep or the network card to be turned off due to inactivity which will cause your workstations to be unable to communicate with the database. Please click on Power Setting Instructions for instructions on setting your power settings.  If you need assistance with this, please contact your local computer professional.

6. Now that Kennel Connection is pointing to the correct database, you will need to set the DSN to point to the same location. Please see the instructions here for setting your DSN:

Setting the Access DSN for Kennel Connection 6 on a Windows 8 machine

Setting the Access DSN for Kennel Connection 6 on a Windows 10 machine

Setting the SQL DSN for Kennel Connection 6

FINAL NOTE: When installing any updates to your software, it is imperative that you close Kennel Connection on ALL computers until the update process is complete. Failure to do so may result in database corruption!
